The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts is Northern New England’s premiere performing arts center. The Flynn offers a wide range of cultural and educational experiences and nurtures the creative development of performing artists. Our facilities include a 1,411-seat proscenium auditorium (Flynn Main Stage), a 180-seat black box cabaret space (Flynn Space), two education studios, a gallery with rotating exhibits of regional artists, and adjoining lobbies.

The Flynn hosts over 200 performances and over 50 camps and classes annually. Regularly scheduled performances include the Flynn season, which features world-class music, Broadway, theater, dance, and family performances on our Main Stage, with additional touring shows added throughout the year and weekday matinees presented through our Student Matinee Series, in addition to the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. The Flynn also provides a performance venue for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Lyric Theatre, and other local arts organizations.

Basic Function

Working closely with the facilities manager, the operation technician provides hands-on support for all building and maintenance needs. This role addresses issues, provides solutions, and troubleshoots building systems while also supporting daily facility and event needs. A Facilities representative is present at all shows to assist front-of-house and maintain a clean, comfortable, and safe environment.

Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide direct assistance to address maintenance concerns both inside and outside the building on both non-show and show days
  • Perform as-needed custodial services 
  • Be the on-site facilities representative during shows
  • Change the marquee lettering 
  • Assist other Flynn staff and departments as needed
  • Conduct pre-show set up and post-show breakdown & cleaning, along with helping to secure the campus at the end of the night
  • Perform minor repairs and troubleshoot campus needs during events
  • Assist in the event of an emergency situation
  • Address safety related issues that may occur during an event
  • Set up and breakdown of special events in gallery, lobby, and other Flynn spaces
  • Monitor and adjust environmental controls during events
  • Other duties as necessary

Supervision Received

Supervision is received from the facilities manager.


  • Responsible, reliable, and self-directed
  • Availability to work some nights and weekends depending on event schedule
  • Ability to perform rigorous physical work for extended periods of time
  • Comfort with climbing ladders and being in confined spaces a must
  • Able to take direction and juggle multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Technologically savvy
  • Professional in communication, demeanor, and appearance
