The Flynn offers sensory-friendly programming for children on the autism spectrum or with other sensory sensitivities. At sensory-friendly performances, house lights are dimmed and sound is adjusted to softer levels. To encourage a relaxed and family-friendly viewing experience, the lobby offers activity spaces (with fidgets, noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, coloring tables), and quiet break spaces which can be used at any time. Other features include gluten-free and sugar-free snack options at the concession counter, ASL interpretation (for most shows); and Braille programs (please request at least 10 days prior to the show).
The Flynn education team collaborated with Chicago Children's Theatre to create Red Kite Green Mountain, an interactive theatrical experience that explores the nature and seasons of Vermont using music and imaginative puppets. In 2020, the Flynn team partnered with Inclusive Arts Vermont to offer sensory-friendly drumming workshops for families, thanks to the generous support of the Surdna, Buffum, and Ford Foundations. The Flynn also presents award-winning performances by other companies for children and families with a sensory-friendly format, such as Schoolhouse Rock Live, The Cat in the Hat, Peter Rabbit, Shh . . . We Have a Plan, Parsons Dance, and The Magic School Bus.
Did you know that social stories, break spaces, sensory-friendly materials, and more are available for all shows at the Flynn?
