NEW FLYNN CLASS: CAPOEIRA

April 14-28, 6 pM

Join Fábio Pereira Nascimento, aka Professor Fuá, in this course focused on movement and culture. Capoeira was invented by Brazilian slaves and is a complex amalgamation of fighting, dancing, singing, social skills, and ritual. Considered one of the largest black resistance movements, capoeira was outlawed from 1890 to 1940 in what was the first constitution of the Brazilian Republic. Capoeira today is played in 150 countries throughout the world. This course will briefly touch on the musical elements of capoeira and will focus more on discovering its fluid and inclusive nature and some concepts such as Axé and Malicia.
