Playing Fields

Free, Whimsical Shows for Vermont Communities

Playing Fields is a back to school party after the summer months that also celebrates schools as community centers. Everyone is welcome to attend these special community events. This project presents awe-inspiring performances in an open field, creating an exciting, communal atmosphere where students, teachers, staff, administrators, families, friends, neighbors, and anyone else in the community can join in the fun.

In September 2022, the first Playing Fields performances featured live music by the energetic world-music band Red Baraat and a simultaneous performance by the mysterious, luminous Birdmen, a large-scale street theater exhibition from the Dutch company Close-Act. In September 2023, the Flynn welcomed French troupe Compagnie Des Quidam and their 12-foot tall, luminous horses for a presentation of Proud Horses at six Vermont schools. Plus, Compagnie Des Quidam marched in the Burlington Pride Parade. We look forward to bringing more magical Playing Fields events to local community centers next fall.

Playing Fields is presented with support from the Buffum Foundation and Dreissigacker  Foundation.
