Join the Flynntones band! Teen Jazz Combo is open to vocalists and instrumentalists between the ages of 13 and 18 who play at an intermediate level and/or have two to three years of experience playing or singing. This combo is a great opportunity for students who would like to build their experience with jazz repertoire, including the music of composers from Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker to Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone. This class also focuses on building improvisation skills and gives students experience playing in a group dynamic. This course instills an appreciation of jazz as a uniquely African-American musical innovation that is now admired, studied, and practiced around the world.

Students in Teen Jazz Combo will rehearse weekly in preparation for a performance at the 2022 Burlington Discover Jazz Festival.

Skill Level

Students will need some familiarity with reading music notation. Guitarists should have some familiarity with reading chord symbols, including basic seventh chords. The first class will include an opportunity for new combo members to demonstrate their skill level on their instrument by playing a selection of scales and/or a short excerpt from a piece in any style. If students prefer not do this in the group setting, times will be available after the first rehearsal. Submitting a video is also an option.
