Ayodele Casel has broken out in a big way over the last couple years, securing her place at the center of the tap scene. She was named one of the New York Times’ “Biggest Breakout Stars of 2019.” She accepted a fellowship at Harvard, where she’s inspiring a new generation of hoofers with her Afro-Latinx-infused percussive style. She was also selected by acclaimed composer Rob Kapilow to collaborate on a tap-dance concerto, which premiered at Lincoln Center. She has performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, and off-Broadway in Savion Glover's Downtown: Live Communication. She also shook the dancing world with her triumphant debut showcase, created with Latin jazz luminary Arturo O’Farrill. At the Flynn, she will perform her latest work, Chasing Magic, a celebration of artistic encounters that is a vibrant, collaborative showcase for her cool, genre-defying footwork. Summarized by Ms. Casel's herself, "I clearly see my purpose. Dance is my entry point to make connections with people and spread joy." Chasing Magic achieves this aim with gusto. For this show, she will be joined on stage by seven-time Grammy-winning pianist, composer, educator, and Latin jazz luminary Arturo O’Farrill. In addition to his celebrated solo work, O'Farrill is well known for his performances with a wide spectrum of artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte.
